GESTURE MODE Requirements:
For gesture mode to work i.e. pickup or dismiss calls from cover with swipe, your phone screen needs to have option to increase the touch sensitivity. To do so you can go to Settings -> Display -> check option to increase touch sensitivity or enable gloves mode.

Flip cover is always good for your device safety, but it also has its trade off in terms of limited visibility of the screen.
