5 stars: This is hands down the best app for Japanese learning. You get to know the culture and why certain structures and phrases are said. It's regularly updated which is great. However, I have a couple of complaints. When in kana-kanji practicing mode I'd like the writing area to be a grid like in Japanese exercise books. In smaller devices you can't even really see the characters while in that mode so you have to remember them before you start writing/drawing them, unless you choose the animation every time which takes some time and it's very inconvenient. It would be great to have a little area where the character is represented, or a little window to pull down while you're drawing to show the stroke length whitout erasing your work. I also can't find access to the unlimited version anywhere on the site.
4 stars: I really like this app but no matter what I put in for the writing vocabulary quiz when it's set to english/kana, it says wrong number of strokes. I know the words are being spelled correctly and the characters are written correctly because they work fine in the kana writing quiz. Really frustrating as I can't use the written quiz for vocabulary. Is the quiz expecting kanji even when it's set to kana mode?
